EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE CAREY SCHOOL BOARD OF TRUSTEES:

Carol Pereira, President

Carol was born and raised in Montreal, Canada, but has lived in California for the last 24 years. She has a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School, a B.S. in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.  Carol is the Chief Financial Officer of Opus Capital, a venture capital firm focused on seed and early stage technology companies. She also spent a number of years in investment banking earlier in her career. Carol served as Treasurer of the CSPA for two years from 2001-2003, and was a room parent for the 2000-2001 and 2003-2004 school years and has served as Secretary, Treasurer and Vice-President of the Board of Trustees. Carol is the parent of one current Carey School student and two Carey alumni. This is Carol’s sixth year on the Board of Trustees.


Sarah Murphy, Vice President

Sarah is the parent of two Carey School students and one Carey alumnus.  This is Sarah’s eighth year as a Carey parent and fifth year to serve on the Board of Trustees. Prior to serving as Vice President of the Board, Sarah was both Secretary of the Board and Chairperson of the Advancement Committee. Sarah holds an M.B.A. from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and an M.A. from Amherst College. She has held positions in Institutional Equity Sales at JP Morgan & Co, Strategic Planning at PepsiCo, Inc., and Investment Banking at Lehman Brothers. She has been very active in fundraising, chairing the auction for St. Chrysostom’s Day School in Chicago and co-chairing her class fund for Amherst College. She has also served on the Board of St. Paul’s Nursery School in Burlingame and on the Chicago Junior League. Sarah co-chaired The Carey School “Raise the Roof” Capital Campaign, and has chaired the Carey School auction, introduced and run the Square One Art program, served on the Teacher Appreciation Committee, and has been a room parent for several years.


Mark Moore, Treasurer

Mark is the parent of three Carey School students. Mark received his B.A. from Georgetown University, MAT from Stanford University and MBA from J.L. Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.  Mark was born and raised in San Francisco, and currently works at Horsley Bridge Partners in San Francisco. Mark spent a number of years working in education, first as a corps member for Teach For America in New Orleans, then as a teacher and administrator in independent schools and finally as the Director of a charter school in Redwood City.  Mark is currently on the Board of the California Historical Society and is a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Burlingame.


Betsy Berman, Secretary

Betsy is the mother of three happy Carey School students in grades 5, 3, and 1. Betsy received her B.A. from DePauw University in Indiana and currently serves as the Associate Director of Development/Alumni Director at Crystal Springs Uplands School in Hillsborough.  Betsy has twenty years of experience working in independent schools, and has served as Campaign Director and Director of Alumnae Relations at The Hamlin School in San Francisco as well as the Director of Admissions, Associate Director of Development, and Director of Alumni Relations at the Latin School in Chicago. Betsy has volunteered in a number of capacities at The Carey School including Annual Fund co-chair, Campaign co-chair, Teacher Appreciation committee co-chair, Mentor Committee co-chair, and room parent.  In addition to serving as Secretary, she currently chairs the Trustee Committee on the Board.


Maria Frantz, Transition Committee Chair

Maria is the proud mother of a Carey graduate and two current Carey School students. Maria is a partner with Stone Communications, a marketing communications firm providing high-stakes presentation consulting services to high growth and emerging companies in the Bay Area. Previously, she worked as a strategy consultant with Gemini Consulting and started her career at Goldman, Sachs & Co. in New York and London. She holds a B.A. with honors from Rice University and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business where she currently serves on the alumni Management Board. As a former treasurer of the CSPA, Walkfest lead and room parent, Maria is excited to extend her involvement at the Carey School to the Board of Trustees and help further the school’s mission.

THE CAREY SCHOOL BOARD OF TRUSTEES:

Nicole Alston

Nicole is the proud mother of three children, two of whom are Carey students and the other, a future Carey student.  Nicole is Associate General Counsel, Content Partnerships at Google Inc. Early on, Nicole served as lead commercial counsel for many of Google’s strategic AdSense advertising syndication agreements. She also led legal negotiations of Google’s contracts with map data suppliers for Google Maps and Earth. She currently oversees a team that manages content partnership agreements for Google Maps, Earth, Finance, Book Search, Product Search and YouTube. Most recently, Nicole negotiated Google’s landmark Book Search Settlement Agreement. Prior to Google, Nicole was the Director, Business and Legal Affairs at Guru Worldwide, and before that was an attorney in the Corporate and Securities Group at the law firm of Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich LLP (now DLA Piper). Nicole received her J.D. and B.A. degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles.


Roberta Chopra

Roberta Chopra is the mother of three children, and is entering her sixth year as a parent in the Carey community. Roberta has served on the Board of Trustees for five years, chairing the Advancement, Development and Human Resources committees. In her first year at Carey, Roberta co-chaired the annual auction and served on the annual giving program committee. Roberta has over 16 years of human resources experience. She was the regional manager for PricewaterhouseCoopers’ International Assignment Solutions Group in Palo Alto. After leaving PwC, Roberta worked as the Director of Human Resources at Barulich, Schoknecht, Dugoni Law Group, Inc., a San Mateo law firm specializing in estate and business planning. As a full-time mother, Roberta is now devoting her time to family.


Brian Dowd

Brian is commencing his sixth year as a Carey parent and is the proud father of two Carey students.  Brian earned a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting and Finance from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and began his career with Deloitte.  After public accounting, over the past twenty years, Brian has focused on working for technology companies at inflection points, assisting with financial infrastructure implementation and governance.  He has been an integral member of four IPO teams with listings on the NASDAQ, NYSE and TASE as well as private equity, debt offerings and business combinations for companies delivering a wide range of products and services including communications software, embedded software, holographic film, payment processing solutions and life sciences research and development products and services. He is a CPA and a member of the California Society of CPA’s, Financial Executives International, Financial Executives Networking Group and is a Board member of the Belmont Redwood Shores Little League.


Devon Gold   

Devon is the parent of a Carey fifth grader and first grader, as well as a seventh grade Carey alumnus.  This isDevon’s eighth year as a Carey parent, and first year on the Board of Trustees where she serves as Advancement Chair. Devon served for the past two years as CSPA President and as an ex officio member of the Board.  Her other roles at Carey have included co-chair of the Auction and Walkfest, Room Parent, and Literature Week Coordinator, and she has also served on the leadership teams for several Annual Funds and the Raise the Roof Capital Campaign.  Devon holds a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and a B.A. in English and Political Science from the University of California, Los Angeles.  She formerly worked as a litigation attorney for the Los Angeles and San Francisco based law firm Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP, where she specialized in antitrust, patent, copyright and trademark litigation.  Devon also served as law clerk to the Honorable Mariana P. Pfaelzer, a federal judge in the Central District of California.  Devon has been active on other nonprofit boards, having served as both Development Chair and President of the Board of Little Wonders, a San Mateo parent participation nursery school.  She has also been involved in fundraising for Team Up For Youth, an Oakland based nonprofit that brings quality sports programs to underserved youth throughout the state.


Annette Goodwine

Annette is the mother of a recent Carey School alumnus. She holds an M.B.A. from the University of Southern California and a B.S. in Marketing from the University of California, Berkeley. Annette is currently a marketing consultant focused on the  development and execution of brand strategy, marketing communications, online marketing, and user acquisition and retention activities for early stage companies. Previously, Annette held several positions at eBay Inc, most recently as senior director, Corporate Communications where she was accountable for internal communications for eBay’s then global employee community of 14,000. As senior director, Consumer Marketing Annette was head of eBay brand management, including architecture, brand identity, research and brand tracking, and offline advertising for eBay.com.  Prior to eBay, Annette held positions at Levi Strauss & Co.  Among her responsibilities, she directed retail-marketing programs and events for the company’s first U.S. owned and operated retail outlets. Annette has volunteered with the Taproot Foundation and Project READ in San Francisco. She has also been a very active Carey parent and has played instrumental roles on the Carey playground project and the Capital Campaign Committee. She has also been a room parent and served on the teacher appreciation committee.


Diane Isola

Diane is the parent of a fifth grader at The Carey School and is starting her third year on the Board of Trustees.  Diane attended Mercy High School in Burlingame before receiving her BA from San Francisco State University.  She is a CPA and has worked in public accounting with a focus on non-profit organizations.  For the past ten years, Diane has served as the CFO and Director of Financial Affairs at Crystal Springs Uplands School in Hillsborough.  She also sits on the board of ISBOA (Independent School Business Officer Association) and Chairs the Finance Council of St. Roberts Church in San Bruno.  Diane has served on the H.R. committee at The Carey School and was most recently Treasurer of the Board and Chair of the Finance Committee.


Cissy Lewis

Cissy is currently Head of Upper School at Castilleja School and has served as Academic Dean and Assistant Head Academic Dean. Previously she was Head of Upper School at The Baylor School and an English Teacher at Hockaday School. She received her education at Harvard University (Ed.M.) Middlebury College (M.A.) and The University of the South (B.A. in English and Biology).



Peter Lim

Peter is a parent of one Carey School student and one Carey alumna. He received his education from Carnegie Mellon University. Peter has over 20 years of experience designing and building large, enterprise systems. He holds 30 patents in the areas of data replication, mobility and CRM. Peter began his career at Oracle where he spent 7 years in the Applications division. Peter worked at Siebel Systems for the next 12 years where he became Vice President Core Technology and delivered 23 software releases to large enterprise customers. Most recently, Peter was Vice President Engineering at SAP Labs after a mobile startup he co-founded in 2007, SkyData Systems, was acquired by SAP. At Carey, Peter previously served as President and Vice President of the Board of Trustees and has spent the last 5 years improving the use of Technology in the school’s operations and curriculum.


Sally Screven

Sally is the mother of two boys, one current Carey School student and one Carey School alumnus.  She has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area since emigrating from Hong Kong at age 11.  Sally holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.  She has held a variety of senior software engineering and product marketing management roles, with a focus on enterprise financial applications.


Erich Sengelmann

Erich is the proud father of two Carey School students. Erich holds a B.A. from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a M.A. from the London School of Economics. Erich is Managing Director of Jones Lang LaSalle’s Silicon Valley office and sits on the firm’s Northwest Executive Committee. Erich brings 20 years of experience in commercial real estate to his role as Chair of the Building & Grounds Committee. Erich is a member of the Corporate Support Committee at SFMOMA and The Guardsmen which supports the needs of underprivileged Bay Area children


Henry Sohn

Henry is the father of two Carey School students.  He received his B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley.  Henry has since had various product, general management and executive positions at a number of technology-based companies, including Apple, Intuit, Berkeley Systems, Compaq, Yahoo!, Gateway and Flurry.  He has also worked on CiviCRM, an open-source CRM project intended for non-profits, and has volunteered at QuestBridge, a non-profit aiming to help low-income, high-performing students get into college.  Henry has previously served on the Executive Board for the College of Letters & Science at UC Berkeley, and the board of Global Healing, a healthcare-based non-profit.


John Somorjai

John, the parent of one Carey student and one Carey alumnus, is Senior Vice President, Corporate Development and Strategy at Salesforce.com where he is responsible for mergers and acquisitions, investments, and other strategic transactions for the company. Previously, John has held positions at Ingenio (acquired by AT&T), and Oracle. He was an Attorney with Dewey Ballantine and Stroock, Stroock & Lavan. Joh has served as a Commissioner of the City of San Mateo Parks and Recreation Commission, and is a former President of the Baywood Owners Improvement Association. While President, the Association received the Citation Award from the California Park and Recreational Society. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Berkeley Center for Law, Business and the Economy at the University of California Boalt School of Law. John received a J.D. from the University of California Boalt School of Law at U.C. Berkeley, and a B.A. from Dartmouth College.


Bill Silver

Bill has served on the Board of Carey School since 2008. He is the father of two children, both students at Santa Clara University. He holds an M.S. in Management from Stanford University and a B.S. from the University of California, Davis College of Engineering. Bill has extensive experience in finance and is currently the Business Manager and Chief Financial Officer at the Menlo School in Atherton, CA. He serves on the Board of Directors and is Chairman of the Audit Committee of Sunoco Logistics (NYSE:SXL). He has served on several other corporate boards and as President of Citibank F.S.B., from which he retired after 24 years of service at Citibank. He serves on the board of Directors of Music at Menlo, one of the Nations’ premier chamber music festivals and summer music education programs, and is Vice Chairman of the Finance and Investment Committee of the town of Los Altos Hills, where he and his wife Joan reside. He served for five years on the Board of Trustees of Sage Ridge School in Reno, Nevada, a grade 5 through 12 college preparatory school, and is a Trustee Emeritus.


Cathleen Thomas, CSPA President, ex-Officio
Cathleen, the mother of two Carey School students, currently serves as the President of the Carey School Parents Association. As an active Carey parent, she has co-chaired CSPA committees, worked on several auction teams, volunteered many years as a room parent and worked as an ambassador for the Annual Fund and Capital Campaign. Cathleen has also served on the boards of her children’s preschool and the local mothers club. Before having children, Cathleen held senior marketing positions with consumer technology firms including Kodak Gallery (formerly Ofoto) and WeddingChannel.com. Her experience includes customer acquisition, conversion and retention, in addition to managing corporate messaging, visual communication and public relations. She began her career in advertising in San Francisco, focusing on product positioning and consumer research. She graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College.


Bill Thompson

Bill is the father of two current Carey School students and one future Carey student.  He  was born in St. Louis, but grew up on the Peninsula.  Bill is currently an investment consultant with Cambridge Associates LLC, where he advises College and University Endowments, Foundations and Family Offices on investment issues such as asset allocation, traditional and alternative manager selection, and investment program evaluation.  Prior to joining Cambridge Associates, Bill worked with Citigroup, as a member of the institutional credit sales team in New York, Chicago and San Francisco.  Bill received his B.A. from Denison University and his M.B.A from the University of Chicago.


Susanne Vagadori

Susanne is a parent of two Carey graduates. This is Susanne’s fourth year on the board, and she serves on the Executive, Finance and Trustee Committees. Susanne was born in San Francisco and graduated from Stanford University with an honors degree in Comparative Literature. After graduating, she went overseas and taught English literature and creative writing at The American School in Switzerland before entering the Masters Degree program in English Language & Literature at Cambridge University in England. Susanne entered the Ph.D. Program in English Literature at Yale University in 1986. Susanne worked at Sun Microsystems for 19 years, holding a variety of senior positions in marketing, public relations, and business development. At Carey, Susanne was a room parent for several years and served as CSPA President for two years before serving as the President of the Board of Trustees.
