A core belief of the Carey school is that all children are infinitely capable of learning and they all hold the innate desire to do so. If a child is under performing in school, there is always an explanation. Behaviors that appear lazy are most often avoidant for a particular reason. While sometimes the explanation, and even solution are simple, often there are multiple factors ranging from physical to psychological, to learning differences, to emotions. All of these possibilities must be taken into account when attempting to reach a child. Over the past ten years there has been an explosion of knowledge available about learning. Brain research, in particular, has revealed information about how humans make meaning and how the brains of children at different ages are actually quite different. A learning specialist, or educational therapist, is an expert in deciphering the science in order to apply the understandings to our classroom practice. A learning specialist helps teachers develop strategies to address a student's learning needs, whatever those needs are. This year at the Carey School, the Learning Specialist will focus on working with faculty in the classroom and through in-service. She will also assist with the admission screening process. In addition, the learning specialist will coordinate outside professionals working with the students and interpret testing done by other specialists.
