The Carey School Library houses over 7,000 materials, including books, videos, and magazines. The library has a fully automated catalog and circulation system and three IMacs that are used as search stations. Each class has a scheduled library class every week, in which they may have story time or an instructional lesson and time for book checkout.

Pre-Kindergarten-Second Grade
Classes for students in grades Pre-K-Grade 2 include story time and opportunities for students to learn basic library skills, such as book care, how to check books in and out, recognizing parts of a book, how to distinguish between fiction and non-fiction, and how to locate books in different parts of the library. Students will develop literature appreciation through the presentation and study of various genres, authors, and diverse perspectives.

Third Grade-Fifth Grade
Students in the upper grades begin to learn more research and information skills, including the Dewey classification system, how to find books using call numbers, how to cite sources, how to search the automated catalogs, and how to find full-text magazine and newspaper articles on online databases. Students become familiar with using materials in our reference section, such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri, atlases, and almanacs. Students will continue to develop literature appreciation through the presentation and study of various genres, authors, and diverse perspectives.

The main goals of our library program are:

1) To promote literacy and literature appreciation, and to motivate students to become life-long learners.
2) To promote multicultural and global awareness, respect, and appreciation, and explore issues of equality, justice, peace and leadership through literature and library media.
3) To teach students to be able to access, evaluate, and use information effectively.
4) To provide materials and services that will support the curriculum and the teaching of the curriculum at each grade level.

Library Programs

Every year, the library hosts special events such as Literature Week. Activities during this week celebrate books and the love of reading, and include professional performances, dressing up as a favorite character, and a literature luncheon.

Through the support of the CSPA, the library also brings in an author and/or illustrator to further inspire children.  Past author visits have included Bruce Hale, Jeff Savage, and Lee Wardlaw.

The Carey School Book Swap is a springtime event which allows students to bring in books that they no longer want and exchange them for books that other students want to swap.  It is an excellent way to get rid of unwanted books and get new books for free!

The Summer Reading Challenge is a school-wide event in which the students are challenged to collectively read a total of 2,500 books over the summer.  This inspires children to reach for a common goal.  Students are rewarded in the fall with a celebration such as Jamba Juice party, pizza part, etc..  Forms are provided before students leave school for the summer.

Library Policies

Library Hours: 8:00am – 3:20pm (closed during lunch)

Checkout Policies:

Pre-kindergarten, Kindergarten, and First Grade students are allowed to check out one book at a time that is kept in their classrooms.  However, parents of these students may bring their child to the library to check out books that the student may take home.  This ensures that the parent is responsible for the materials.

Students in grades 2 through 5 are allowed to take home books that are checked out, and they may borrow the number of books that equals their grade level (i.e. Grade 2 may check out two books at a time, Grade 3 may check out up to three books, etc.).  At the discretion of the librarian and teacher, this policy may be modified for certain assigned projects.

Books are borrowed for two weeks at a time and are checked out on school days.  Students may return books early, and they may renew books by bringing them to the library to be checked out again.  Overdue notices will be sent home on a periodical basis.  If a book is lost or damaged, students will be asked to pay for the replacement cost of the book.  Students should carry books to and from school in a bag or backpack, preferably waterproof.

All books are due two weeks prior to the end of school.

Classes are scheduled in the library on a weekly basis for story-time, instructional lessons, or for research activities.  Some time is allotted for students to check out books at this time.  Students are also allowed to come in during library hours to exchange books.
