The Library Curriculum

Pre-Kindergarten-Second Grade

Classes for students in grades Pre-K-Grade 2 include story time and opportunities for students to learn basic library skills, such as book care, how to check books in and out, recognizing parts of a book, how to distinguish between fiction and non-fiction, and how to locate books in different parts of the library. Students will develop literature appreciation through the presentation and study of various genres, authors, and diverse perspectives.

Third Grade-Fifth Grade

Students in the upper grades begin to learn more research and information skills, including the Dewey classification system, how to find books using call numbers, how to cite sources, how to search the automated catalogs, and how to find full-text magazine and newspaper articles on online databases. Students become familiar with using materials in our reference section, such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri, atlases, and almanacs. Students will continue to develop literature appreciation through the presentation and study of various genres, authors, and diverse perspectives.
