The Pre-Kindergarten Curriculum

LANGUAGE ARTS
The Pre-Kindergarten Language Arts curriculum emphasizes the development of an appreciation for books and stories as well as focuses on the development of pre-reading skills. Additionally, students develop an understanding that we read from left to right, letters make sounds, sounds create words and that with these words we create sentences to help us communicate and tell stories. Through reading, students are exposed to story sequencing and cause and effect. Students are encouraged to ask questions and communicate both orally and in writing in full sentences. Furthermore, the Language Arts curriculum emphasizes strengthening fine motor skills and assisting students with writing letters in upper and lower case.

MATHEMATICS
The Pre-Kindergarten mathematics curriculum utilizes pre-math activities and games which include the concepts of number recognition, one-to-one correspondence, sequencing, patterning, sorting, rote counting, shape recognition, fractions (whole and half), measurement, and basic addition. Through the use of puzzles, manipulatives, books, graphs, and number boards skills are reinforced throughout the year.

SOCIAL STUDIES
The Social Studies curriculum prepares students to learn how to deal with other people’s feelings and to celebrate different cultures and occupations. Students focus on concepts of the self, family, friends, feelings, helping/sharing, rules, jobs, rewards, cooperation and consequences. Furthermore, pre-kindergarteners are exposed to occupations, cultures, continents, oceans and different countries. Additionally, the curriculum places a large emphasis on observing and respecting rules and boundaries.

STUDY SKILLS
The Pre-Kindergarten Study Skills curriculum focuses on memorization and concentration skills. Through the use of graphs, maps, and activities related to patterning, labeling, categorizing, classifying, sequencing, problem solving, and creative thinking, students areencouraged to increase their attention span and their organizational skills. Additionally, personal responsibilities are emphasized such as knowing where their cubbies are, cleaning up after play or work time, and maintaining their clothing. All of these skills provide a strong foundation for future academic studies. Furthermore, the curriculum focuses on helping students deal with transitions and providing them with strategies for dealing with conflicts by using conflict resolution methods.
