Science Instruction at The Carey School
The Carey School Science Program is aligned with the National Science Education Standards (NSES) produced by the National Research Council (NRC), the Science Standards put forth by the California Department of Education, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Our science program is one that engages the whole child in observation of the world around them. The students in all grades learn scientific concepts by direct experience in a hands-on, mind’s on approach encouraging them to ask questions and allowing them to draw conclusions based on their observations and experimentations. “The National Science Education Standards present a vision of a scientifically literate populace. They outline what students need to know, understand, and be able to do to be scientifically literate at different grade levels. They describe an educational system in which all students demonstrate high levels of performance, in which teachers are empowered to make the decisions essential for effective learning, in which interlocking communities of teachers and students are focused on learning science, and in which supportive educational programs and systems nurture achievement.” All students, regardless of age, can scientifically observe their world. Each grade level adds deeper complexity and layers to their scientific understanding. At the core of our science program is curiosity coupled with inquiry, a teacher/student partnership of engagement. Click here to view The Carey School Standards for Science Education. |
