The 3rd graders are creating a self-portrait using influences from what they learned about Frida Kahlo. One important aspect about Frida’s self-portraits are she painted objects and animals such as monkeys, cats and nature in her backgrounds (all of which are very important to her). Another signature of her work is the image on her forehead in some paintings these represent emotions, feelings or things that were on her mind at the time the pieces were created. The 3rd graders took these ideas and influences as they sketched their individual concepts. In the backgrounds you’ll see various objects that are important to them such as animals, Legos, and family. The real challenge for them was to figure out what to put on each of their foreheads. They are to focus on an image about themselves that most people don’t know. This could be about their personality, thoughts that they often have or something people don’t know about them. Come and check out the “Frida’s” when they are on exhibition!
